THE ROAD TO WIGAN PIER

DSC_0046

I went to Wigan Pier

To see what I could see

Only to discover

The pier was no longer there

It had been demolished sometime in the past

And where it stood exactly

No one could be sure.

  1. Well, I’ll be driving past Wigan Pier on my way to work shortly. Today it’s an area by the canal where the wharves and warehouses used to be. The pier was a Music Hall joke by the comedian George Formby senior – the original was simply a “tippler”, a device used to tip coal from carts on to barges. And, yes, it was probably gone by the time Orwell visited our town. But there’s a replica there today!
