There is such a “shit storm” going on in the world everyday these days one hardly knows where to begin. Let’s start with the NFL situation. Compelling football players to stand during the national anthem is at the very least a violation their free speech even if the NFL is a private concern. Free speech is a basic human right and is protected in the First Amendment to the constitution of the United States. It is perhaps the most patriotic thing one can do. And what are the players protesting? Injustice. They are not protesting the Anthem, or the flag, or the country. But, rather, injustice.
What’s to be done? My suggestion is to boycott the NFL. Stop watching football. I know this is going to go over big with football fans of whom they are legion, but I am going to say it anyway. Football is a brutal, violent sport that injures its players and brings out the worst in it’s watchers and participants. And it is boring to boot.
So, I say don’t watch it. Read a book, take a hike, go to a concert, or do something creative or helpful. But don’t watch football.
This NFL situation has got me mad, to put it mildly. From here on out, I’m not going to watch a single game or support the NFL in any way. Apparently rape and cheating are okay for the NFL (Ben Roethlisberger and Tom Brady, respectively), but being black and having an opinion isn’t.

Benn,
An alternative is to quit watching TV news. Football season is over.
I don’t watch either TV or football, so it’s not an issue with me. Both are reprehensible.
Speaking of free speech: Did you know it’s legal to burn a US flag but not to burn a dollar bill?

Ironic isn’t it!

Sad, too. Violence begets violence. Football seems to be either a symptom or a reflection of America’s addiction to violence. TV’s hate-and-fear mongering only feeds it.

They are disrespecting everything about this country when they disrespect the flag, and anthem. The veterans served under that flag, they salute it and protect us because of it. Those glory hounds complain about WHAT injustice – the country that is making them millionaires playing a GAME?!

Thanks for your comments GP. With all due respect to you, these athletes are not disrespecting the flag or the anthem. They are protesting, using their first amendment rights of free speech, the injustice of hundreds of black men gunned down by the police.
